Karen M Sadowski, MSN, RN

Integrative & Functional Medicine Practitioner

Modern life presents numerous challenges to gut health, including chronic stress and inflammation, trauma, environmental exposures, antibiotic overuse, inadequate nutrition and exercise. These factors can lead to imbalances that manifest as autoimmune disorders, metabolic dysfunction, hormonal disturbances, skin conditions, neurological and mood related symptoms. By integrating clinical nursing expertise with Functional Medicine, I focus on identifying and addressing the root causes of imbalance. This is a comprehensive, patient-centered model of care—one that prioritizes restoration, prevention, and long-term vitality.”

Karen utilizes evidence based solutions, which may include the recognition of how compromised the physical state of the GI track is from a normal healthy one; identifying the DNA composition and degree of imbalances amongst the amount and type of bacteria, microbes and the physical condition of the tight junctures that serves to be an impenetrable wall, separating the interior lining of organisms along with food from disseminating into the blood stream that can adversely affect the organs, nerves, bone and metabolism.

Therefore, assessments include diagnostic testing to evaluate and provide the appropriate remedies that may include high quality probiotics that play well together and will crowd out, diminish and or eliminate problematic ones from the stomach and GI track. For potentially serious problems, Karen works in tandem with GI physicians; whereby, further diagnostic studies are necessary such as an endoscopy, enterography and or colonoscopy may be indicated.

The leading health and safety factor is to identify, correct and maintain the health and integrity of the gastrointestinal track including the mega mucosal lining, the intestinal barrier, the identification of microbes and types of bacteria in the gut and whether there is a healthy balance. Guided by the enduring wisdom of Hippocrates—who stated, “Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity”—Karen’s work reflects a deep commitment to patientcentered, holistic care. His well-known principle, “All disease begins in the gut,” continues to resonate in modern science and underscores the clinical significance of the microbiome.

Consistent with Hippocratic principles, Karen emphasizes:
• The critical role of diet in maintaining health
• The gut as the foundation of overall well-being
• The importance of proper digestion for nutrient absorption and immune function
• A holistic approach that addresses lifestyle, environment, and root causes of disease

Karen is currently seeing clients in Virginia, Maryland and Florida.
