Why Your Nervous System Matters

You may have heard the phrase “regulate your nervous system” everywhere lately. But what does it actually mean?

Your nervous system constantly responds to what is happening around and within you. When you experience stress, conflict, or perceived danger, your body can shift into a state of activation. Learning to recognize these responses can help you better understand your emotions and reactions.

The American Psychological Association offers helpful information about how stress affects the body and mind.

A Crash Course in Polyvagal Theory

Polyvagal Theory, developed by Stephen Porges, is one framework used in trauma-informed therapy to understand how the autonomic nervous system responds to cues of safety and threat. You can learn more from the Polyvagal Institute.

In simple terms, you may notice three broad patterns:

🟢 Regulated & Connected

You feel relatively safe, present, flexible, and able to connect with others.

🔴 Fight or Flight

You may feel anxious, angry, restless, overwhelmed, or constantly “on.”

🔵 Shutdown

You may feel numb, exhausted, disconnected, or like you simply cannot engage.

These responses aren't character flaws. They are ways the body can respond to stress.

3 Simple Ways to Regulate

1. Slow Your Breathing

Try inhaling for four seconds and exhaling for six. Don't force deep breaths—simply allow your breathing to slow.

2. Ground Yourself

Look around and notice what you can see, hear, and physically feel. Remind yourself:

“I am here. I am safe in this moment.”

3. Move Your Body

Take a walk, stretch, practice yoga, or simply step outside. Regulation doesn't always mean sitting still.

Regulation Doesn't Mean Being Calm All the Time

A regulated nervous system isn't one that never experiences anger, anxiety, or sadness. Regulation means having the capacity to experience emotions and return to balance.

If you frequently feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck in fight-or-flight, therapy can help you understand your patterns and develop personalized regulation skills.

At Total Health Concepts, therapy can incorporate CBT, DBT, mindfulness, somatic approaches, and trauma-informed care to support emotional regulation and overall well-being.

Final Thought

You don't have to control every emotion you experience.

Start by noticing what your body is telling you—and responding with curiosity instead of judgment.

Your nervous system is not your enemy. It's communicating with you.
